THE TIMESHARE OF THE SEAS? WHAT DOES UNLIMITED REALLY COST?
A headline annual price can sound like the ultimate cruise bargain. Our consumer checklist looks at what a Margaritaville at Sea annual membership may include, what it may exclude, and the number of sailings it would take to beat booking individually. The word “timeshare” is a question about the sales pitch, not a statement that the membership is a real-estate timeshare.
THE WEEK IN 60 SECONDS
- A $2,499 starting price for two adults is a starting point, not an all-in annual vacation budget. Confirm current offer terms before purchasing.
- Taxes, port expenses, daily gratuities and possible fuel charges can change the true per-sailing cost.
- A 30-day booking window, availability restrictions and one active reservation can make theoretical unlimited trips hard to use.
Got a minute? You’re caught up. Have five? Keep going.
THE BIG STORIES
What Does “Unlimited” Really Cost?
The advertised starting membership price is only one part of the math. Compare the annual fee, charges on every voyage, travel to the port, onboard spending and the booking restrictions. Before buying, get written confirmation of eligible departures, booking windows, blackouts, cancellation rules and whether consecutive cruises are allowed.
Why we’re watching: Break-even depends on how many eligible cruises you can actually book and take, not the number you could imagine taking. Compare the same cabin type, dates and number of guests against ordinary fares.
How Many Cruises Until the Membership Pays Off?
Use this calculation: annual membership fee divided by the per-sailing savings after accounting for all membership-only and ordinary-booking costs. If the membership saves $400 on each comparable sailing before the annual fee, a $2,499 fee would require seven sailings to come out ahead. This is an illustration, not a verified live fare comparison.
Why we’re watching: If your schedule permits only two or three sailings, a lower annual headline may still lose to booking individually.
AROUND THE CRUISE WORLD
The Hidden Price of “Included”
Ask which port charges, government taxes, daily service charges, beverages, Wi-Fi and specialty experiences remain payable each time you sail. Never add a charge twice when comparing quotes.
A Booking Window Can Be More Important Than the Price
Confirm when sailings become bookable, how quickly inventory disappears, whether a single active reservation is permitted and how blackouts work. A membership is only valuable when the available dates match your life.
The Right Comparison Is Total Vacation Cost
Compare a like-for-like ordinary fare against membership costs for the same dates, guest count and cabin. Include transport to the port and other unavoidable charges on both sides.
THE HUMAN ELEMENT
A membership does not remove the people who make the voyage possible. Behind the advertised rate are crew members, port workers and shoreside teams supporting every departure.
A Low Fare Does Not Mean a Low-Effort Vacation
Even a short sailing depends on navigation, housekeeping, food preparation, maintenance, security and guest services. Consider the whole experience, not just the headline rate.
