CRUISE BETTER.
NOTICE MORE.
You do not need to memorize a hundred rules before you sail. You just need the right information at the right time. Cruise Tips is organized around the journey, from the days before you leave home to the morning you walk off the ship.
WHY THIS DEPARTMENT EXISTS
THE TIP IS NOT THE MEMORY.
A good cruise tip should disappear after it has done its job. It saves you a little time, prevents a little frustration or points you toward something you might have missed. Then it gets out of the way so you can make the memory yourself.
FROM MARITIME MONDAYS • THE PRICE OF PARADISE EDITION
UNLIMITED CRUISING? DO THE MATH BEFORE YOU BUY.
Start with the membership fee, then add mandatory taxes, port expenses, gratuities, transportation to the port and any other charges for every trip. Compare the full cost with ordinary bookings for the same dates, guests and cabin type.
Confirm eligible ships and sailings, how far ahead you can reserve, blackout dates, cancellation penalties and how many reservations you can hold at once. Get the current written terms before paying.
Work schedules, travel time and available cabins determine whether a membership makes sense. Divide the annual fee by the real savings per comparable sailing, then round up to find your break-even number. If the savings are zero or negative, the fee cannot pay for itself.
Terry’s Cruise Tip: Unlimited access is not unlimited value. Buy for the cruises you can realistically book and enjoy, not the number promised in a headline.
Membership prices, availability and terms may change. Verify the current offer directly with the cruise line.

Your cabin steward is one of the people you may see most often during the voyage. Learn their name, introduce yourself and treat the relationship like what it is: two people sharing part of the same week at sea.

ASK A CRUISER.
Got a question? Someone here may have sailed it before. Ask about ships, cabins, ports, dining, excursions, packing or anything else about cruising. Terry and other cruisers can join the conversation.
HOW IT WORKS
You ask. Questions are held briefly for moderation.
We talk. Terry and other cruisers can reply once the question is published.
